I can’t believe another half year has been and gone. Here we are smack in the middle of winter, July 2009. What can I say; thank goodness I live in the tropics. Now it’s time to discover some health beauty tips to beat those winter blues.

“Put another log on the fire; cook me up some bacon and some beans…”
Trouble is we’re tempted to pile on more; comfort food. Even though we’re aware of the risk, time and again many of us fall victim to the winter weight gain. And hence evolves the “Battle of the Bulges”. However remember “prevention is better than a cure”. Doesn’t that sound all too familiar? We all know it’s much too easy to put on weight however it’s a constant battle trying to lose those unwanted kilos.

So here’s some suggestions on how to beat it and feel good doing it.

Start your morning with the juice of a fresh lemon squeezed into a glass of water at room temperature. Follow this with a couple of glasses of warm water. This will help to alkalize your stomach and cleanse it too and I guarantee you won’t want anything to eat for a while. Water will help decrease your eating and helps with weight loss. Yes!

For brekky enjoy filling yourself with a low kilojule complex carbohydrate such as rolled oats prepared as porridge. This will keep you satisfied on a cold winter morning. It’s also known to reduce cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart disease. Did you know how good that old fashioned porridge was?

Follow up with a small serving of fresh fruit for smoko to get you through to lunch.

For lunch perhaps give one of these a go.
Rice wraps spread with avocado, baby spinach leaves and finely sliced Italian salami dressed with herbamere and cracked pepper,
or a filling of your choice.
A leafy green mixed salad with chopped shallots, diced red capsicum, diced roma tomato, some 3 bean mix (drained), sliced avocado, mixed with a tin of sweet chillie tuna tossed and dressed with a drizzle of cold pressed olive oil, balsamic vinegar, herbamere and cracked pepper served with toasted wholegrain bread slithers. Scrummy!

For afternoon smoko you might like to give a banana smoothie a go.
Did you know bananas are a great source of vitamin B, high in potassium, also high in vitamins C & A and a source of natural fibre? Bananas are low in calories and fat, and high in water content. Bananas are a great destresser and are a marvellous source of energy. Eat bananas 30 minutes before a workout or as an energy boost for the start of your day. If fresh bananas aren’t available, semi-dried bananas work just as well.

For dinner, try a hearty soup followed by a mix of vegies and a serve of meat such as roast. Your protein serve should only be the size of your fist.

Did you know that studies have shown that people eat up to 20% less in a meal when they have soup as starters to their meal? Wouldn’t you want that? And what a great way to warm up.

For a snack or dessert try a baked apple served with some warm custard. Oh and don’t forget May’s health beauty tips. Remember the benefits of a good quality dark chocolate. Now don’t forget to indulge in some goodies once a week; it’s better than not at all ’cause your body will crave and it’s too easy to be tempted and that’ll be your downfall. We all know it’s so easy to pile on a bit more during these winter months. The winter woolies hide those extra kilos very well but the fitted jeans and tops won’t. So beware!

Remember to maintain a balanced diet following the rules of the 5 food groups and dish up a smaller portion size. It’s important to eat regularly to keep your metabolism working – so eat more frequently, drink plenty of clean water and bulk up your meals with vegies and snack with fruit, salad or vegies; warm up with soup, herbal teas, or the occasional hot chocolate or cappucino.

Now in between all of this don’t forget to include your regular exercise training schedule. If you don’t have one, start one. If it’s too cold then vary your timing to suit. Did you know simply walking will help you lose weight if put together with a good balanced diet? Morning walks are fantastic. This is when your insulin levels are low so it’s a great time for burning extra energy and your endorphins will get you smiling, energized and feeling good!!! What a wonderful way to start your day.
