How to let your immune system bust the nasties and beat the bugs!

Do you feel the tease of spring at your doorstep? I just can’t wait for the fresh blossoming scents of spring to appear. Only 3 weeks ladies! However before that, let’s discover how to recover and beat those nasty chilly weather bugs. So let’s “beat it! Beat it! Beat it!” And maybe you too can ‘moondance’ into spring with me.
Are you one of many battling the sniffles or the dreaded flu? If not, don’t become complacent because any winter month is notorious for begetting the unwanted when it’s not wanted. And you don’t want the swine and you don’t want to whine. So pay attention and have good intention.
Did you know that how we feel is linked to what we eat? Eating makes us feel good. “I love it! I love it! I love it! If only you would follow, follow, follow…”. Because the bad news is that eating the wrong foods not only makes us susceptible to weight gain but also decreases our immunity and when our immune defences are down our body is less able to fight against any bugs and infections. Time and again we’ve learned how important the right foods are to our skin, our body weight, our health and now to how we feel. So if food is so important even to combat the common cold and flu, what choices do we make?
Here’s some bug fighting foods to beat the chilly winter colds and flus.
- Drink freshly squeezed natural juice daily. Why? Remember our June tips. Juices contain nutrients that are in a form requiring no digestion so they are readily and immediately absorbed and spread into our body tissues.
- Add garlic, onions, ginger, chilies, tumeric and cumin to stirfries, curries and bean dishes. Did you know… Garlic kills harmful bacteria and viruses and even fungi and is known to give your immune system a boost and is good for your heart of hearts. Onions are well reputed as one of the most common and effective natural cold and flu remedies. Ginger is good for your tummy; very settling. The heat from chilies and cumin makes for a fabulous decongenstant, cleaning airways and sinuses, almost instantaneously. Tumeric is terrific especially for its antiseptic qualities. It’ll also make your nose run and run to clear it.
- Eat as many brightly coloured vegetables and fruits as you can. These foods are rich in anti-oxidants. Eating a wide range of them each day will give your body the best mix of anti-oxidants in the right amounts. This will help boost the effects of Vitamin C.
- Eat a small portion of nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds daily. These foods are high in healthy fats and are a good source of vitamin E which improves your immunity and protects cells, preventing disease.
- Eat a serve of shellfish, lean red beef or chicken. These foods are rich in zinc which is also known to strengthen our immune system too.
So boost your body and let your immune system bust those nasties and beat the bugs. Remember to follow the simple rules. You need to:-
- Drink plenty of water; at least 8 glasses a day and more if you exercise.
- Exercise regularly. Make the effort; just some moderate walking will do.
- Make time to sit and eat slowly, chew lots, and enjoy good food choices remembering a healthy combination of the 5 food groups.
- Relax and de-stress.
- Get plenty of rest and sleep.
And now if it’s too late. So what, ’cause here’s some of your Mamma’s good old fashioned cold and flu remedies for when you’re down and out, feeling miserable and pathetic.
- Eat plenty of home made chicken soup; the real stuff.
- Drink warm milk laced with plenty of sugar or honey, or drink a camomile tea, or if you’re game, a hot toddy of water, whiskey and lemon.
- When you’re ill you’ll lose your appitite so,
- Spice up your food with garlic, onions and chillies and any spices.
A good curry encourages you to eat. The heat in curries increases your sweating which actually reduces your temperature. Curry also increases blood cells and your heart will beat faster.
- So sweat it out.
- Breathe steam with a vapourizer or steam baths.
- Get plenty of rest and recuperation.
Now if you’ve been eating a wonderfully healthy diet your flu symptoms will be lighter and your sickness will be shorter. So don’t despair.
