Welcome

It’s Rocktober news time for health and beauty.  So let’s rock around the clock to November with passion while keeping in ‘sun’ fashion.

“Don’t worry!  Be happy!”  ‘Cause every day is ‘sun’ day.  You got it.  Have you ever noticed how a beautiful bright sunny day improves your mood, making you feel happy and energetic and yet a wet rainy day can sometimes make you feel ‘sad’ and lethargic especially when the wet drags on.  So put a little bubble in your trouble and rock it away.

Sunlight, in moderation, is good for you.  Not only does it improve your mood, it stimulates hormone production, enhances immunity and promotes growth.
Sun“Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy” because sunlight is the best source of vitamin D.  Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which is only stored in our bodies for a short period of time which means we need to keep at it time and again and again.  Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin.  It’s crucial for optimium health, growth and development of our bones and teeth.  It’s required for proper absorption of calcium and phosphorous in our bodies.  Deficiency leads to soft bones and many more troubles to burst those bubbles.  The experts say that about 1/3 of all Australians are deficient in vitamin D.  So get a little sunshine every day.  The sun is fun.  Believe it or not.

But there’s more…
“Sunlight inhibits a hormone in the brain called melatonin.  Melatonin creates a calmness in your brain and gets your body and mind ready for sleep.  It’s a hormone that’s needed at night so it’s produced when the sun goes down, but during the day exposure to sunlight will help keep melatonin at bay and enhance the alert state of the brain, as well as help to get rid of the blues.  Unfortunately in the far reaches of the northern hemisphere, some people who have very little natural sunlight exposure are diagnosed with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) known as the winter blues.  This disease is characterised as depression due to lack of sunlight.  Sufferers endure oversleeping without refreshment, overeating, depression, irritability, lethargy and lowered resistance to infection.  Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry.  This disorder is not an imaginary illness.  The cure is exposure to sunlight every day”.  (Cindi O’Meara)  Australia, the land down under, is the lucky country indeed with a good balance of day and night.  How lucky we are.  Doesn’t that wanna make you rock around the clock?

And there’s more and more…
Did you know your skin protects you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.  The amount of natural sun protection you have depends on the amount of melanin you inherited.  The darker your natural skin the more melanin you have.   However food, food, yummy, scrummy food can boost your body’s own natural sun protection.  It’s about making the right choices.  Are you starving yourself?

It’s carotenoids and lycopene that can be absorbed from food that you need to increase your sun protection.  Carotenoids are the green and orange protectors and are found in green leafy vegies such as spinach and kale, carrots, pumpkins, mangos and sweet potatoes.  The beta carotene from those foods is effective in protecting against sunburn.

Lycopene is the red avenger and is found in red capsicums, watermelon and particularly cooked tomatoes as lycopene actually increases through processing and is more easily absorbed in the body.  I see red, I see red, I see red.  But not for long because consumption of these foods improves the skin’s ability to protect itself against the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Good fats in the form of salmon, sardines, flaxseed oil and the list goes on also have a good affect on skin protection whereas manipulated or man-made fats such as hydrogenated vegetable oils and margarine actually increase our sensitivity to light.  Artificial sweeteners can also be added to this list and much, much more.  So beware and remember the rule, health is your wealth and it always comes back to good food choices.  So you’ve gotta love the stuff, don’t you?  “How right you are, how right you be, how right you are for me”.  “The best 6 doctors, and no-one can deny it, are sunshine, water, rest, air, exercise and diet”.  (Wayne Fields)  What more can I say.  Plenty, ’cause here’s a fact.

Our skin is our largest breathing organ and we generally mistreat it.  Do you want to know more?  90% of aging is caused by external factors such as sunlight and lifestyle.  Most premature aging is caused by sun exposure.  Without protection, exposure over the years can cause noticeable changes to our skin.  Freckles and age spots, rough and leathery skin and more. This type of aging is known as photoaging caused by exposure to the sun’s rays.  Confused?

To sun or not to sun?  To sunscreen or not to sunscreen?  These are the vital questions.  You be the judge and jury.  It’s risky business.

We know the sun is at its strongest and most lethal between 10.00am to 2.00pm.  So avoid the burning rays.  And if you can’t, well then “slip, slop, slap”.  Slip into cool protective clothing, slop on the safest sunscreen and slap on a wide brimmed hat.  “Slip, slop, slap”.

Here’s some tricky business ’cause not all suncreens are created equally.  But what’s more; research has shown that some sunscreens can be bad for you because those bad chemicals can be and largely are absorbed into the skin.  So let’s break it down and learn some stuff.

UVA is ultraviolet A ray.  Remember A is for aging rays which are the long wave solar rays.  These rays penetrate the skin deeply and are the culprits causing wrinkles, age spots, rough leathery skin and other photoaging.

UVB is ultraviolet B ray.  Remember B is for burning rays which are the short wave solar rays.   These rays are more potent than UVA in causing sunburn.

SPF is sun protection factor which measures the length of time a sunscreen product protects against reddening of our skin from UVB rays.  However you need to understand that there are many factors that contribute and no sunscreen will offer full protection from either UVA or UVB rays.  Rule of thumb -  most sunscreens with a minimum SPF15 will provide protection of about 2 hours.  However don’t forget to re-apply after swimming and exercising.  So be sunwise and get out of the sun when your time is up.  Look at it like this.

You’ve put a chook in the oven to roast.  If you leave it in too long, even with the oven switched off, no amount of basting is going to save that chook from becoming a dried out, wrinkled, tough leathery piece of meat.  Well remember you’re like that chook.  Do you really want to be known as just a piece of dried out meat?

So be sun smart; enjoy the earlier morning or later afternoon sunshine.  If you’ve ‘gotta’ be in it, well then “slip, slop, slap” and then get out.  So what to do?  Pick the most natural sunscreen that provides both UVA and UVB protectors with a minimum SPF15 which is believed to block about 93% of UVB rays.  Apply at least 30 minutes before exposure.  There is no UVA measure however research shows you should wear a sunscreen which protects both ways.  Choose one that does not penetrate the skin, but rather remains on the surface and outer layer of the skin which is only composed of non-viable cells which the body rids of.  This will offer the best solution for your inner and outer health.
