The Connection Between Sugar and Acne
Happy New Year!
Did you overdo it this silly season? You, me, and…probably everyone else you know. Too much partying, too
much alcohol, too much food, too many sweets, not enough exercise, not enough water, not enough sleep? What was
it for you? All of the above?
Well for me it was too many sweets. Unfortunately I’ve always been partial to delectable, delightul, delicious
sweets; my personal favourites being icecream and cakes. I’m sure you’ve all heard that an excess of anything
is generally not good for us. And I’m sure this is most certainly true.
I’m going to share with you what I’ve discovered about myself in the hope that it may help others. However, first
let me say that I’ve suffered from a mild form of acne since my younger years and into and through my adult life.
Did you hear me say ’suffer’? Yes! Acne can undermine your confidence and make you hide away from the world which
in turn creates other problems. It shouldn’t have this effect but sometimes it does. So here’s a cheer to all
acne sufferers and may you discover the root of all your acne fear. It’s taken me all of my 45 years to discover
the main culprit and that’s a fact. Can you believe it?
Here’s the pitch. ‘SUGAR’ is my worst enemy. Or should I say it’s PROCESSED SUGAR. The sugar and acne debate has
been around for years with holistic healers and naturopaths saying sugar effects acne whereas doctors and
dermatologists have largely said that sugar does not cause acne. Who do you believe?
What is the connection between sugar and acne? New research shows acne is affected by the glycemic index (GI) of
foods and ultimately causes hormonal imbalances. Did you know that the food we eat is converted to sugar as it is
digested? However different foods convert at varying rates. So the food we eat affects our blood sugar levels.
Foods with a high GI such as sugar and sweets convert quickly to sugar which causes a rapid rise in blood sugar
levels. As a result of this it triggers our body to release hormones like insulin. It is our liver that is
responsible for the breaking down of our hormones, the cleansing and detoxifcation of our internal body. If our
liver is not working properly hormonal imbalances will occur causing many and varied problems. As you can
imagine the internal intricate workings of our bodies is a complex issue.
It is said that people with acne have been shown to process sugar poorly which in turn causes an inflammatory
response on the cellular level; thus acne develops. In other words some of our toxins are eliminated through our
skin. So what’s the result of this debate? That ultimately PROCESSED SUGAR has a real impact on acne.
If you’re an acne sufferer why not put this to the test. What have you got to loose other than some kilos. The
best method is to record everything you eat and drink each day and also record your findings daily. You may see a
pattern developing. However, BEWARE THE HIDDEN SUGAR in almost every processed food product you purchase.
My results? Even the smallest amount of PROCESSED SUGAR causes my skin to react. Yet I have always been a big
fruit lover. I eat mountains of fruit however as far as I can gather natural sugars from fruits does not seem to
affect my skin adversely. I have yet to truly discover what else has a major impact on my skin because ‘other’
there certainly is.
Yet again and again, what is the lesson? Eat good wholesome foods. Keep it as natural, simple and varied as
possible – raw fruits, vegetables, legumes, salads, nuts, seeds, fish and protein together with plenty of good pure
water and freshly squeezed natural juice for nutrition, energy and health with the aim of being well balanced and
having beautiful clear glowing skin.
And in the meantime you may be looking for some natural healing remedies to help you on your journey. Try these
options.
Both freshly squeezed cucumber and lemon juice applied topically provides some relief for acne prone skin. Leave
on for a minimum of 15 minutes or apply before bed. Allow to dry and wash off in the morning. Topical application
of lemon juice on unhealed acne may cause a minor burning sensation. Cucumber is cooling and calming and lemon
will reduce the redness and swelling. These juices also make wonderful cleansing drinks and will provide benefits
to your skin from the inside out.
So what do I use to heal my skin? Well in addition to lemon juice, it’s Arbonne’s Seasource Detox Renewing Body

effects. Remember there’s no pure, safe and beneficial quick fix however there are pure, safe, beneficial

So what’s my pick?
